James Gunn Celebrates Superman Day With a New Set Photo

Celebrating 86 years of The Man of Steel, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and director of Superman, delights fans with exclusive behind-the-scenes content. Gunn shared a photo on his personal Threads account, featuring himself alongside Superman stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, immersed in various Superman comics. Brosnahan, portraying Lois Lane, delves into All-Star Superman, while Corenswet, embodying Clark Kent, explores Action Comics #114, and Gunn immerses himself in Superman #1. Gunn has openly expressed that these comics will inspire his interpretation of Kal-El in the DC Universe.

The film boasts an impressive cast including Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, and Nicholas Hoult as the main antagonist, Lex Luthor. Gunn, unveiling the lineup for Chapter 1 in the DC Universe, titled Gods and Monsters, stated that Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy) would mark the inception of the new DC Universe. Currently, the only confirmed characters transitioning from the DCEU to the new DCU are John Cena’s Peacemaker, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, and Xolo Mariueńa’s Blue Beetle.

What’s More About 2025’s ‘Superman’?

Superman is currently in production, with new cast members unveiled as filming progresses. Recently, it was announced that Pruitt Taylor Vince would portray Superman’s father, Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell would star as Clark Kent’s mother, Martha. Wendell Pierce will succeed Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Planet Newspaper.

The most thrilling aspect is that Superman will not retell The Man of Steel’s origin story. Similar to Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, audiences have witnessed Clark Kent’s journey to becoming Superman numerous times. Therefore, Gunn opted to begin with a seasoned Kal-El. He emphasised that Superman resides in a world brimming with other heroes but assured that none would overshadow the essence of the narrative, centred on Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor. Gunn aims to avoid the DCEU’s past mistake of introducing too many heroes simultaneously by crafting a vibrant universe filled with diverse characters while maintaining focus on the core storyline.

James Gunn’s Fresh DC Universe

With all the insights into 2025’s Superman, optimism surges for DC’s future. James Gunn faces the challenge of reviving a franchise plagued by issues in developing a coherent cinematic universe. Nonetheless, he demonstrates readiness for the task at hand. DC also benefits from the timing, as the MCU’s dominance may be ebbing slightly with the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. This presents an opportunity for DC to prove its mettle and establish a cinematic universe akin to what the MCU achieved with the Infinity Saga.

Superman is slated for release on July 11, 2025, marking the dawn of a new era for DC storytelling. Stay updated with Collider for the latest developments.
